World Cup 2010 Qualifying:
The US had to work hard to seal qualification with a 3-2 win over Honduras, but Bob Bradley's side did enjoy the luxury of having a game to spare. United States coach Bob Bradley said "We're very proud. We understand the responsibility we have every time we step on the field for our fans, for our country."Past World Cup Performance:
Despite many people associating Football in the USA with American Football, their Soccer team as the game is known in the States have a surprisingly good record at the World Cup. They have qualified for the last 5 World Cup tournaments! The USA appeared at the very first World Cup back in 1930 and made the semi-finals where a 1-6 defeat by Argentina sent them home. At the 1950 World Cup, the United States lost their first match 1-3 against Spain, but then won 1-0 against England in what is widely considered one of the greatest upsets in football history! In 1994 the USA hosted the World Cup and made the knockout stages for the first time since 1930. The match against Columbia ended in a 2-1 win for the USA but it will always be remembered for the unfortunate own goal scored by Columbian Andreas Escobar who was later murdered with many believing his killing to be an act of retaliation for the own goal! The USA's participation ended after a 0-1 defeat to eventual World Cup Champions Brazil. With the MLS and the likes of David Beckham at LA Galaxy raising the sports profile, Soccer in the USA now has a strong following which reflects in their current ranking of 18th in the World Standings. The USA will face England, Algeria and Slovenia in Group C at World Cup 2010 and they could make the last 16 once again!USA - Key Players
