Worldcup 2010 Group B : Argentina

Worldcup 2010 Group B : Argentina

Argentina

Coach: Diego Maradona

The legendary Diego Armando Maradona is the current manager of the Argentine national team. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest player's of all time alongside Pele. Although he had little previous managerial experience, he became head coach of the Argentina national football team in November 2008.

World Cup 2010 Qualifying:

After a troubled qualifying campaign, Diego Maradona's side came good in their crunch match in Uruguay, with Mario Bolatti's late goal securing the 1-0 win which secured their place at South Africa. Argentina had only failed to qualify for a World Cup once in their history in 1970 but their win secured the fourth and final qualifying spot in the South America group. On qualifying Argentina coach Diego Maradona said "I would like to thank the team for giving me the privilege to lead Argentina to World Cup. Thank you to the Argentine people who had faith. This is for those who did not believe in the national team and treated me like dirt - they will now have to accept this."

Past World Cup Performance:

Argentina are one of the most successful national football teams in the world, and are currently eighth in the FIFA world rankings. The team has twice won the FIFA World Cup, in 1978 and 1986. It was in Mexico at World Cup 1986 that now coach Diego Maradona stole the show and led the team with some unbelievable individual play as well as the infamous "Hand of God" goal against England! The Argentina squad is packed full of World Class players with the likes of Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano and Sergio Aguero and if Maradona can get them playing then they are more than capable of claiming their third World Cup in 2010. The draw has also been kind to Argentina as they will meet Nigeria, South Korea and Greece in Group B but with Maradona at the helm anything is possible!
